UltraEdit is a commercial text editor by IDM Computer Solutions. It features syntax highlighting, code folding, and many other high-end programmer-friendly features. Because of this, it can be fairly well integrated into the Creation Kit and Papyrus scripts. It can be downloaded from here.

Setting up compilation[edit | edit source]

In UltraEdit, third-party tools are defined by "User Tools".

  1. Click on 'Advanced -> Tool Configuration'.
  2. Give your new tool a name, such as 'Papyrus Script Compiler'
  3. In the Command Line box, point it at the ScriptCompile.bat file from the CreationKit download. For example, on my system, it looks like:

  • NOTE: Check Skyrim\Papyrus Compiler\ScriptCompile.bat and make sure its file paths match your installation's. The below in its entirety should work for a default Skyrim installation on x86 or x64 Windows.

The "%f" at the end is the current filename & path opened in the editor.

  1. On the Options screen, the Program Type should be a DOS Program, and you probably want it to save the active file first.
  2. On the Output screen, set it as you wish. I suggest capturing the output, and outputting to List Box for a clean result however. Replace Selected Text should be set at No Replace.

That's it. You can set up an appropriate keyboard short cut, and icon, adding it to toolbars and all that jazz later if you wish.

Setting up Papyrus Language Definitions[edit | edit source]

Syntax Highlighting[edit | edit source]

Create a new file, called "papyrus.uew", and save it in your UltraEdit wordfiles folder. This is usually located at "%APPDATA%\Roaming\IDMComp\UltraEdit\wordfiles". Copy and paste the contents of the below file into this new file & save it.

Now when you load any file of extension 'psc' in UltraEdit, it should have syntax highlighting. The colours I have left as fairly vanilla, so you can adjust them either in the wordfile itself, or through the UltraEdit preferences dialogue.
